Travelling to Mauritius With Children: Wedding & Honeymoon Guide
Nobody warned you that planning a destination wedding with children yours, your siblings', your soon-to-be nieces and nephews would feel like a separate logistical project on top of an already large logistical project.
But here you are, and actually, it is going to be wonderful.
Mauritius with children is a completely different experience from Mauritius without them, and not in the ways you are probably worried about. Children respond to this island with a specific kind of joy that is very good to be around. The ocean is warm and shallow in the lagoons, the food is varied and reliably good, the pace of life is genuinely unhurried, and the Mauritians themselves are exceptionally warm to children in a way that makes you feel supported rather than judged when the toddler does what toddlers do.
If you are bringing children to your wedding or honeymoon in Mauritius, here is what we have learned across hundreds of family weddings over sixteen years.
Children at a Mauritius Wedding: The Honest Version
Children at weddings are wonderful in the photographs and occasionally challenging in the planning. We say this with love. We have photographed flower girls who fell asleep during the vows, ring bearers who refused to walk, and children who photobombed formal portraits in ways that became the favourite images from the entire day.
Children make weddings human. They make them funny and warm and alive in a way that adult-only weddings sometimes miss. The best wedding photographs almost always involve children doing something slightly unpredictable.
What they need, logistically, is planning. Consider where they will be during the ceremony do they have a shaded seat, a view, and an adult who is specifically responsible for them? If the ceremony is outdoors in the Mauritius heat, even in the cooler months, children need water, shade, and something to hold their attention. A flower girl who has been standing in the sun for forty minutes before she has to walk down the aisle is going to be a different child from one who has been playing nearby and is excited to have her moment.
We always recommend having a child minder or trusted family member specifically designated to children during the ceremony. It frees the parents to be fully present and it means that when a child has a moment, it is handled before it becomes a disruption.
What Mauritius Children Remember
Here is what children who come to Mauritius remember: the fish. The lagoon, which is warm and shallow and full of colour. The coral. The way the sand is so white it looks like snow but feels nothing like it. The mangoes because Mauritius mangoes are extraordinary, and children somehow always know this immediately.
They remember the warmth at night, which is entirely new to children from northern Europe. The feeling of being able to be outside after dinner in shorts and not be cold. The geckos that appear on the walls of hotel rooms. The loud, sudden tropical birds.
These memories are real and they last. A child who attends a family wedding in Mauritius at age five will carry something of that island with them not the specific memory of the ceremony, but the sensory impression of the place, which is entirely different from anything they have experienced at home.
Honeymoon With Children: Making It Work
The concept of a family honeymoon or a minimoon followed by a family trip to the same destination has become genuinely popular among couples who either have children from previous relationships or who know that a purely adults-only trip is logistically impossible.
We will say honestly that a honeymoon is most romantically complete when it has at least some time that is just the two of you. Even a single afternoon, a long dinner after the children are asleep, a morning photography session while a trusted family member keeps the children at the hotel these pockets of intimacy matter.
The good news is that Mauritius makes it easy. The resort childcare services here are excellent several of the major hotels have kids' clubs that children actively look forward to, which gives parents genuine windows of freedom. Private villas with live-in staff can also manage children with extraordinary grace. The infrastructure for family travel here is genuinely good.
Photography With Children in the Frame
When couples ask us about including children in their wedding or honeymoon photographs, we always say yes, with enthusiasm.
Photographs of children in beautiful places doing real things wading in a lagoon, chasing a wave, asleep in a parent's arms on the beach are among the most emotionally powerful images we make. They tell a different story than the couple-only images. They tell the story of a family at its beginning, or at a specific and irreplaceable moment in its life.
We let children be children during photography. We do not pose them or ask them to perform. We simply watch and wait and move fast when something happens that deserves to be preserved. Children are, in our experience, the most naturally photogenic subjects in the world precisely because they have no relationship with cameras yet, no self-consciousness to unlearn.
A Few Practical Notes
Flights to Mauritius from Europe are long ten to fourteen hours depending on your departure city. With children, this is a real consideration. Younger children often adapt surprisingly well to long-haul flights with good preparation: familiar snacks, new entertainment downloaded specifically for the trip, and a consistent sleep rhythm maintained through the flight if possible.
The time difference between Mauritius and Central European Time is plus three hours in winter and plus two in summer. For families with young children, this is actually a manageable difference you will adjust within a day or two, and the early morning tropical light will quickly become your children's favourite thing.
Pack for the sun. Mauritius sun is intense even in the cooler months, and fair-skinned children from northern Europe need more protection than they would at a Mediterranean beach. High-factor reef-safe sunscreen, rash vests, and hats are non-negotiable.
The ocean is generally safe for families in the lagoons, where the reef protects the water from currents and waves. Ask your hotel or villa about the specific safety conditions for the beach where you are staying some areas have stronger currents, and local knowledge always trumps general advice.
