The Week Before Your Mauritius Wedding: What to Do, Feel & Let Go
The Week Before Your Mauritius Wedding: What to Do, Feel & Let Go
You have arrived. Or you are about to arrive. The planning is, for all intents and purposes, done. The vendors are confirmed. The documents are in order. The dress is hanging in the wardrobe in its garment bag and you have already unzipped it twice just to look at it.
Now there is a week to go, and you are not entirely sure how to inhabit this time.
We have been here with hundreds of couples, and we want to tell you what we have learned about the week before a Mauritius wedding what to do, what to feel, and most importantly what to let go of.
The Urge to Perfect
It will come, usually around day two or three. A detail that suddenly seems inadequate. A timeline that looks different now that you are on the island and the distances are real. Something the coordinator said that you did not quite understand, and now you cannot stop thinking about.
The perfectionist impulse which has served you brilliantly through eighteen months of planning becomes your enemy in the final week. Because the truth is, the week before your wedding is not for refining. It is for arriving.
Everything that needed doing has been done. Everything that remains to be handled will be handled by people you have hired specifically to handle it. Your job, in this final week, is to transition from the person who has been planning a wedding to the person who is about to have one.
This transition is harder than it sounds. It requires trust in your vendors, in the plan, in the island itself, which has been hosting weddings for decades and knows how to hold one.
What to Actually Do With the Days
The practical answer: very little that relates to the wedding.
Get into the ocean. Go early in the morning when the light is clean and the beach is empty. Feel the salt water and the warm current and the particular softness of an Indian Ocean lagoon. This is not a luxury it is preparation. The body knows the difference between someone who has been sitting at a laptop managing details and someone who has been in the ocean, and the photographs will know it too.
Eat well. Sleep fully. Walk in the early evenings when the light is golden and the air smells of frangipani and ocean. Have a long dinner with your partner without talking about the wedding. Talk about your life together the version of it that begins in a week, and the version that has already been unfolding for however long you have been building toward this moment.
If you have family or close friends arriving through the week, give yourself the pleasure of showing them the island. Take them to a beach market. Drive to the south and show them the dramatic black rock coastline. Let the island do what it does to everyone who comes here for the first time open them up, slow them down, make them glad to be alive.
The Feelings Nobody Warns You About
Here is what we notice on pre-wedding sessions in the final week: couples are more emotional than they expect to be.
Not because anything is wrong. Because something is deeply, irreversibly right. And that rightness, arriving in full after so long of being theoretical, produces a specific kind of overwhelm that is entirely beautiful and occasionally terrifying.
You may cry. You may cry at nothing at the quality of the light at six p.m., at a song that comes on in the restaurant, at the way your mother looks at you when she sees the dress for the first time. This is not a problem. This is the feeling doing what it is supposed to do.
Your partner may go quiet and internal in a way that worries you. This, too, is usually not a problem. People process large things differently, and the approach of a wedding day is a very large thing. Give each other space to feel what you each need to feel, and check in simply and directly: I am nervous and happy. Are you?
The answer is almost always yes.
The Thing to Let Go Of
This is the most important part.
Somewhere in the week before your wedding, there will be a moment when you have to genuinely release the outcome. Not abandon your preferences you have earned your preferences and your coordinator will honour them but release the attachment to a specific version of perfection.
Because the day will not be perfect. There will be a small thing that goes differently from how you planned it. Perhaps the flowers are a slightly different shade. Perhaps the ceremony starts twelve minutes late. Perhaps it rains for twenty minutes and then stops and the sky becomes extraordinary.
And the couples who let go of perfect are the ones who have the most beautiful days. Not because less goes wrong, but because they are present for what is actually happening rather than mentally comparing it to a version that only ever existed in their heads.
The day in front of you is real. The light is real. The person you love is real. Everything else is detail.
A Note From Us
We will meet you properly in the days before the wedding for a venue walk-through, for the pre-wedding session if you have booked one, to simply sit together for an hour and talk through the day.
When we meet you that week, what we are looking for is not the details of the timeline. We are looking at you how you are feeling, what you are carrying, what you need. Because our job on the wedding day is not just to press the shutter at the right moments. It is to create conditions in which the right moments happen at all.
The week before your wedding in Mauritius is one of the most extraordinary weeks of your life. Be in it.
